Wenge: exotic brown-black striped wood

Wenge: (Millettia laurentii ) Wenge is a mostly straight grained, very coarse wood that has strong dark brown and black striping. I find it hard to work with because of its coarse texture and large open pores. You spend more time pulling out slivers (that burn) than working with the wood. But when you need a dark almost black wood you put up with its difficulties as it is about 1/3 of the cost of ebony, and has a much more interesting grain pattern.
