Birdseed:
I haven't been able to find out alot about this species of wood, but have been led to believe from personal contacts that this wood is used extensively to make furniture in Jamaca. It is medium hard, very straight grain, pale grey to reddy brown, very variable in colour, very brittle.
Have made a wall unit out of this. It absorbs stain very consistently and easily -- I was looking for a deep burgandy colour with litte grain, and I hate trying to stain maple, so this provided a better solution. --

Darina:
(Carapa guianensis )
Darina is kind of an interest exotic wood from South America, because of its fasinating texture. The grain is very coarse, and exhibits a neat pattern on the exposed cross grain, especially on turned work.
It is a medium slightly orange coloured wood, of average density. The sapwood is grey and very coarse, perfect for wolf hair if you're the type that does intarsia, although rarely is an entire board like this

Determa:
(Ocotea rubra )
Determa is a very straight grained, moderately coarse wood. The wood is very pretty, consistent pinkish red with a satiny finish.
I haven't used it a lot so can't really tell you that much about its working characteristics, but my guess is that it would be similar to oak... somewhat fibrous, sands and planes well

Dukaria:
Dukaria is a very straight grained, fine textured wood. It is a consistent purple-meduim brown colour with limited grain pattern.
I haven't used it a lot so can't really tell you that much about its working characteristics, but my guess is that it would be similar to maple... somewhat dense, sands and planes well, but your blades must be sharp.

Greenheart:
(Ocotea radiaei)
Greenheart is a very straight grained, fine textured wood. It is a mustard-green to olive-brown colour with limited grain pattern. It can include grey and black steaks in some boards. The wood is very dense, and highly resistant to decay, termites and fire, thus great for outdoor projects and even seen in fishing rods.
It is moderately hard to machine so predrilling is manditory and your cutting blades must be sharp. It polishes to a fine shine, and turns well.

Hubaballi:
(Loxopterygium sagotii)
Hubaballi is a relatively soft textured wood, with a grain pattern similar to rotary cut oak. About 70% of the boards have alternating bands of light and brown streaks creating a interesting visual pattern. The balance is a medium tone brown. Wood is resistant to decay but liable to insect attack.
It is fairly easy work and finish.
